Moodle for Teachers Administration - Training for Moodle 2.5

 Participants of the course will learn to:
1. Create categories and courses on a Moodle website.
2. Create methods of enrollment including PayPal.
3. Enroll students
4. Provide students and teachers with permissions and teacher, manager and student roles.
5. Learn to search for items on the Moodle
6. Learn about the appearance of a Moodle site.
7. Develop the front page.
8. Create video text tutorials for students and teachers on how to use Moodle.

Participants will receive support in installing their own Moodle websites and receive hosting services at Integrating Technology Hosting and Consulting Services (ITHCS) at a discount price for the first year.

Week 1 

Getting Started



Lots of  introductions this week, everybody is so "Passionate" about learning and teaching with Moodle 2.5. This week we started off getting ourselves acquainted with the GPA - General Practice Area and learned about Categories and Courses.

 Week 2

Hi all, 

Well things are starting to pick up pace. This week we were asked to follow the video recordings and ask questions in the discussion forums, invited to keep a log of the information we acquired and reflect on a blog/vlog on Moodle or on an external blog or wiki. On which we will be evaluated.

(On September 15, participants, who have been active on the blogs/wikis will be invited to join a raw Moodle called Practising Mindfulness where they will have a chance to be managers and admin of the Moodle).

Very straight-forward. This very short, precise, video explains perfectly how to create methods of enrrollment.

Another straight-forward video. There were some questions on the forums about self and auto enrolment.
I commented on taking a look at the postings on the Moodle docs site: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=109034 and especially the last one by Jonathan Moore.
There also exists a plug-in Auto-Enroll: https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=enrol_autoenrol   that works for Moodle 2.0 thru 2.5




Roles and Permissions

 I'm a little confused with Roles and Permissions. I understand the difference between the roles and their permissions but I have a couple of questions about things I didn't completely understand in the video.

Question 1: I don't understand "Context Types". Isn't the Manager a Personal Role? Or, does this mean that the Manager can manage the System, Users, Categories etc. (any selection or all)?

Question 2: Is the hierarchical structure in role switching inclusive? If I select the Manager Box for Manager at the beginning of the row, does it give the manager all other roles as well, or do I have to select all (or some of) the subordinate roles as well (as shown in video)?

Week 3

This week participants had to complete the task set up in the final topic section of the course. Once completed the 4 video tutorials on teacher, course creator, manager, and student support, we were given the role of an admin on Practising Mindfulness raw Moodle website.  
Please enrol in the Practice for Managers (P4M) on this Moodle site where you will have the role of a manager so you can  screenshare the information as a manager of a course.

Moodle Front Page

Moodle uses the term role to describe various different kinds of association between people and courses. Several common roles are predefined; you can even define new roles.

Manager (a type of Admimninistrator) - Can do anything, anywhere on the site.

Course creator - Can create a new course and teach in it.

Teacher with editing rights - This role is defined relative to a specific course, and any user with that role can modify course content and assign grades.

Student - For a given course, someone with Student role in that course can see the course content, submit assignments, and see their own grades.


I set about making the most difficult (in the sense of complicated and drawn out) video first - Moodle Manager.
I went through the Mount Orange School demo Site Admin topics with a fine-tooth comb and made a PPT presentation which I uploaded to Slide-Talk (SlideSpeech not functioning).

I don't see the rhyme or reason for making the other three videos. Just seems like a lot of repetition. Why not just tack-on the differences for the Course Creator, Teacher with editing rights and Student roles to the Manager video? But here goes!

Week 4

Contemplating the Moodle Universe while Practising Mindfulness



I've been very busy this week, designing and setting up a new course on Moodle 2.5. It's called "Changing the Appearance of Moodle 2.5" and its purpose is to show Moodle Administrators, Managers and Course Creators, how to change their courses appearance without changing their standard Theme(s).

The first class, "Why don't we just change the default theme?" deals with the pitfalls of changing Themes and the best practices to be used in organizing the text and image layout, and thus adding structure and visual interest to your Moodle course page.
